Seeking Forgiveness and Repentance
Guilt is a heavy burden, but Islam provides a clear path to spiritual purification through sincere repentance (Tawbah). These du'as and hadiths are a source of comfort and guidance, reminding us that Allah's mercy is vast and He loves those who turn to Him in regret.
Duas for Forgiveness
Sayyid al-Istighfar (The Master of Forgiveness)
اَللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَىٰ عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي، فَاغْفِرْ لِي فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ
Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa Anta, khalaqtani wa ana 'abduka, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu. A'udhu bika min sharri ma sana'tu, abu'u laka bi ni'matika 'alayya, wa abu'u bi dhanbi, faghfir li fa innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa Anta.
"O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me, and I am Your servant, and I am abiding by Your covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessings upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for none can forgive sins except You."

اَللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ، دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ، وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ، وَعَلَانِيَتَهُ وَسِرَّهُ
Allahumma aghfir li dhanbi kullahu, diqqahu wa jillahu, wa awwalahu wa akhirahu, wa 'alaniyatahu wa sirrahu.
"O Allah, forgive all my sins, the minor and the major, the first and the last, the apparent and the hidden."
(Sahih Muslim)Hadith on Allah's Mercy
إِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ يَبْسُطُ يَدَهُ بِاللَّيْلِ لِيَتُوبَ مُسِيءُ النَّهَارِ، وَيَبْسُطُ يَدَهُ بِالنَّهَارِ لِيَتُوبَ مُسِيءُ اللَّيْلِ، حَتَّىٰ تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا
Inna Allaha 'azza wa jalla yabsutu yadahu bil-layli li-yatuba musi'u an-nahar, wa yabsutu yadahu bin-nahari li-yatuba musi'u al-layli, hatta tatlu'ash-shamsu min maghribiha.
"Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, extends His hand at night to accept the repentance of the one who sinned during the day, and He extends His hand during the day to accept the repentance of the one who sinned during the night, until the sun rises from its west."
(Sahih Muslim)Hadith on the Joy of Repentance
لَلّٰهُ أَشَدُّ فَرَحًا بِتَوْبَةِ عَبْدِهِ حِينَ يَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ، مِنْ أَحَدِكُمْ كَانَ عَلَىٰ رَاحِلَتِهِ بِأَرْضٍ فَلَاةٍ، فَانْفَلَتَتْ مِنْهُ وَعَلَيْهَا طَعَامُهُ وَشَرَابُهُ، فَأَيِسَ مِنْهَا، فَأَتَىٰ شَجَرَةً فَاضْطَجَعَ فِي ظِلِّهَا، قَدْ أَيِسَ مِنْ رَاحِلَتِهِ، فَبَيْنَمَا هُوَ كَذَلِكَ إِذَا هُوَ بِهَا قَائِمَةٌ عِنْدَهُ، فَأَخَذَ بِخِطَامِهَا ثُمَّ قَالَ مِنْ شِدَّةِ الْفَرَحِ: اَللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ عَبْدِي وَأَنَا رَبُّكَ، أَخْطَأَ مِنْ شِدَّةِ الْفَرَحِ
"La-Allahu ashaddu farahan bi taubati 'abdihi hina yatubu ilaihi min ahadikum kana 'ala rahilihi bi-ardhin falatin, fanfalatat minhu wa 'alayha ta'amuhu wa sharabuhu, fa-ayisa minha, fa-ata shajaratan fad-taja'a fi zilliha, qad ayisa min rahilihi, fabainama huwa kadhalika idha huwa biha qa'imatun 'indahu, fa-akhadha bi-khitamiha thumma qala min shiddatil farahi: 'Allahumma anta 'abdi wa ana Rabbuka', akhta'a min shiddatil farahi."
"Allah is more joyful with the repentance of His servant when he turns to Him than one of you who was on his camel in a desolate land, and it ran away from him with his food and drink on it, and he gave up all hope. He went to a tree and lay down in its shade, having given up hope of finding his camel. While he was in that state, he saw it standing beside him. He took hold of its bridle and, out of his extreme joy, said: 'O Allah, You are my servant and I am Your Lord!'—he made this mistake due to his extreme joy."
