Understanding Hypocrisy (Nifaq) and Seeking Sincerity

Hypocrisy, or *nifaq*, is one of the most serious spiritual diseases. It is the act of outwardly showing belief while concealing disbelief. The Quran and Hadith warn us against this trait, while also providing guidance and prayers to purify our hearts and seek sincerity in all our actions.

Dua for Protection from Shirk and Hypocrisy

اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوْذُ بِكَ أَنْ أُشْرِكَ بِكَ شَيْئًا وَأَنَا أَعْلَمُ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا لَا أَعْلَمُ

Allahumma innee a'oodhu bika an ushrika bika shay'an wa ana a'lamu, wa astaghfiruka li-maa laa a'lamu.

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from associating anything with You knowingly, and I seek Your forgiveness for what I do not know."

Dua for Sincerity

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ سَرِيْرَتِي خَيْرًا مِنْ عَلَانِيَتِي، وَاجْعَلْ عَلَانِيَتِي صَالِحَةً

Allahumma aj'al sarirati khayran min 'alaniyati, waj'al 'alaniyati salihatan.

"O Allah, make my private affairs better than my public ones, and make my public ones righteous."

Hadith on the Signs of a Hypocrite

آيَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ ثَلَاثٌ: إِذَا حَدَّثَ كَذَبَ، وَإِذَا وَعَدَ أَخْلَفَ، وَإِذَا اؤْتُمِنَ خَانَ

Ayatul munafiqi thalath: Idha haddatha kadhaba, wa idha wa'ada akhlafa, wa idha u'tumina khana.

"The signs of a hypocrite are three: whenever he speaks, he tells a lie; whenever he promises, he breaks his promise; and whenever he is entrusted, he betrays his trust."

Hadith on the Hypocrite's Prayer

تِلْكَ صَلَاةُ الْمُنَافِقِ، يَجْلِسُ يَرْقُبُ الشَّمْسَ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا كَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَيِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَ أَرْبَعًا، لَا يَذْكُرُ اللّٰهَ فِيهَا إِلَّا قَلِيلاً

Tilka salatul munafiqi, yajlisu yarqubush-shamsa hatta idha kanat bayna qarnayish-shaytani qama fanqara arba'an, la yadhkurullaha fiha illa qaleela.

"That is the prayer of the hypocrite: he sits watching the sun, and when it is between the horns of Shaytan, he stands and pecks four times without remembering Allah in them except a little."
