"Read! In the Name of your Lord..."

Islam began with a command to read. It places supreme emphasis on education, seeking knowledge, and deep reflection (Tadabbur) upon the universe.

The First Command

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

"Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists)." (96:1)

The very first word revealed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was not "Pray" or "Fast", but "Read". This signifies that knowledge is the foundation of faith.

Tadabbur (Reflection)

أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ الْقُرْآنَ

"Do they not then contemplate on the Qur'an?" (4:82)

Reading without understanding is not enough. Islam encourages Tadabbur—deep thinking and reflection on the verses of the Quran and the signs in the universe.

"Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave."
