The Meaning of Hikmah
Hikmah, or wisdom, is a profound gift from Allah. It is more than just knowledge; it is the ability to understand the true nature of things and to act upon that knowledge with sound judgment. It is the light that allows a believer to navigate life's complexities with clarity, purpose, and righteousness.
"He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good."

Wisdom from the Holy Quran
Reflect upon Creation
The Quran repeatedly calls upon humanity to reflect (tafakkur) upon the signs of Allah in the universe—the alternation of night and day, the stars, the mountains, and all of creation. This reflection leads to a deeper understanding of the Creator's power and wisdom.
Justice and Balance (Mizan)
A core theme of Quranic wisdom is the establishment of balance and justice in all things. Believers are commanded to be just, even if it is against themselves or their loved ones, and to avoid all forms of excess and extremism.
Wisdom from the Prophet's Sunnah
The Wisdom of Silence
The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that true wisdom is often found in controlling the tongue. He said, "Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent." (Bukhari). This teaches us to think before we speak and to avoid idle, harmful, or useless talk.
Responding to Ignorance
True wisdom is shown in how one responds to negativity. The Quran advises: "And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace." (Qur'an 25:63). This is a lesson in responding with patience and peace, not anger.

The Nature of this Life
Islamic wisdom teaches that this worldly life is a temporary test, a field for planting seeds for the Hereafter. True success is not measured by wealth or status, but by righteousness and the pleasure of Allah. This perspective frees the heart from attachment to the material world.
Gratitude in Ease, Patience in Hardship
The Prophet (ﷺ) said that the affair of a believer is always amazing. When good comes to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. When hardship befalls him, he is patient, and that is good for him. This balanced approach is a hallmark of true wisdom.
Wisdom on Character & Conduct
Humility (Tawadu')
True wisdom leads to humility. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that "Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah will raise his status." (Muslim). A wise person recognizes their own shortcomings and their complete dependence on Allah, which prevents arrogance and pride.
"And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height."
